Fall in Fort Lauderdale brings cooler weather, shorter days and fewer mosquitoes. In short, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors! So, why not create your very own backyard movie theater for your family, friends and neighbors? All you need are a few simple materials that you might already have in your home, a little creativity and some popcorn!

Backyard Movie Theater

Setting Up Your Movie Screen

What you need:

  • 2 thick, white queen–size ironed flat sheets
  • Top pole 1.5″ diameter x 10′ long
  • Bottom pole 3″ diameter x 10′ long
  • Rope — 2 different thicknesses

 Instructions:

  1. Start with two queen–size ironed flat sheets. Sew them together with white thread so the long sides are joined creating a tube.
  2. Insert the 1.5–inch diameter pole and let the fabric hang down.
  3. Attach thicker rope to the ends of the top pole so that it can be attached to a tree or under the awning of your home.
  4. Once attached, slide the thicker pole through the tube created by the sewn sheets so that it creates a weight at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Attach thinner rope to the ends of the bottom pole.
  6. Insert two tent stakes directly beneath the bottom corners of the screen, tie the thinner rope to both of the tent stakes and pull taught. This will insure that the screen doesn’t sway in the wind.

Setting Up Your Theater

What you need:

  • Projector
  • DVD Player/computer
  • Speakers
  • Seating (futon pads, cushions from pool lounges, beach chairs, or even toss pillows and blankets)
  • Tables
  • Lanterns
  • Snacks

 Instructions:

Once your movie screen is set up, you can create a casual, comfortable seating arrangement using plush cushions and soft, moisture–resistant pillows. Lanterns strung overhead and several groups of flameless candles can enhance the ambiance. If mosquitoes are especially pesky in your yard, consider adding some tiki torches with citronella oil.

A few simple drinks and snacks are all you need to complete your outdoor theater. Don’t forget the popcorn!
