About Pompano Beach
The City of Pompano Beach, Florida is located in the northeastern section of Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County. The city extends as far east as the Atlantic Ocean, west to the Florida’s Turnpike, north to Sample Road and a bit south of West McNab Road. Adjacent cities include Coconut Creek, Fort Lauderdale, Lighthouse Point, Margate and Sea Ranch Lakes.
Settlers in the area date as far back as the mid-1880s. However, it is said that one of the the first documented permanent resident, Frank Sheen, gave the community its name. Sheen was said to have jotted down the name of the fish he had for dinner on his survey. Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) is a fish found off the Atlantic Coast.
