The History of Monopoly: From Streets to Boardrooms

Monopoly’s origins trace back to the early 20th century. The game was created by Elizabeth Magie Phillips in 1903 as “The Landlord’s Game.” It was designed to illustrate the economic theories of Henry George, advocating for the single tax theory. Magie’s game featured many elements that would become synonymous with Monopoly, including properties and player tokens.

In the 1930s, Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, discovered the game and made several modifications. Darrow’s version gained popularity and was eventually bought by Parker Brothers in 1935. The game was renamed Monopoly and became a household staple, spreading its influence worldwide. The traditional board, based on Atlantic City, New Jersey, became iconic, with properties like Boardwalk and Park Place becoming symbols of high stakes and high rewards.

The Fort Lauderdale Edition: A Local Twist

Fast forward to today, and Monopoly has evolved into a versatile game with numerous themed editions. The Fort Lauderdale Edition plans to offer a fresh local flavor to the beloved classic board game.

The game’s licensing company received hundreds of submissions from visitors and locals of historical sites, landmarks, restaurants, businesses and other highlights. The goal is to create a unique version of the game that will relevant for generations.

Monopoly: Fort Lauderdale Edition is expected to replace the traditional Atlantic City properties with famous Fort Lauderdale locations. Instead of Boardwalk and Park Place, players will be able to invest in places like Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale Beach and The Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

As for the special tokens and cards, they will be tailored to the city’s charm.  Expect to find miniature versions of local icons, such as a speedboat or a flamingo. The Community Chest and Chance cards will also be customized to reflect local events and experiences, adding a layer of local color to each draw.
