The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is undergoing a major expansion with the construction of Terminal 5 (T5)—a modern, eco-conscious terminal designed to meet growing passenger demand and improve the overall airport experience. Scheduled for completion in mid-2026, Terminal 5 is a key part of the airport’s multi-billion-dollar transformation.

A Closer Look at Terminal 5

Terminal 5 will span approximately 230,000 square feet, featuring five new domestic gates, expanded TSA screening, ticketing and baggage areas, passenger hold rooms, retail and dining options, and a multilevel pedestrian bridge connecting it to Terminal 4. Travelers will also benefit from enhanced curbside areas and easy access to adjacent parking structures.

The terminal is expected to accommodate up to five million additional passengers annually and support more than 1,200 permanent jobs, making it one of the most impactful infrastructure investments in the region.

Design and construction are being overseen by JetBlue Airways in partnership with Broward County. The architectural team includes Gensler, a global design and architecture firm, working in association with Bermello Ajamil & Partners, known for transportation and urban design, and HDR Inc., a multidisciplinary firm specializing in engineering and infrastructure. Together, these firms are shaping the vision for Terminal 5 as a forward-thinking, traveler-focused facility.

Airline Assignments: Who’s Flying from T5?

Once operational, Terminal 5’s five new domestic gates are expected to primarily serve JetBlue Airways, one of FLL’s largest carriers. JetBlue’s strong presence at the airport and direct role in developing the terminal make it the anchor airline for the new facility.

Breeze Airways, a rising low-cost airline, is planning to launch service from FLL this fall and is likely to become part of the T5 lineup.

Allegiant Air was previously expected to gain access to gates through the now-canceled JetBlue–Spirit merger. With that deal no longer moving forward, Allegiant’s participation in T5 is currently uncertain and would depend on new agreements with the airport.

While additional airlines may be added over time, Terminal 5’s early operations are expected to focus on serving leading low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers, aligning with FLL’s market profile and continued passenger growth.

Sustainability at the Forefront

Terminal 5 is being built with LEED v4 Silver certification in mind. Sustainability features include low-VOC building materials, energy-efficient HVAC systems, abundant natural lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and an in-line hydrant fueling system designed to reduce carbon emissions during aircraft servicing.

These environmentally friendly measures reflect FLL’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental footprint while enhancing operational efficiency.

Part of a Bigger Vision: FLL Master Plan

Terminal 5 is not a standalone project—it’s part of a larger modernization plan across the entire airport:

  • Terminal Connector Walkways between Terminals 1–2 and 2–3 are in progress, with secure, post-security access expected by 2027.

  • A future Automated People Mover (APM) will link terminals, parking structures, and a planned intermodal center by 2030.

  • A $3.2 billion terminal modernization program is underway across Terminals 1–3, updating interiors, signage, concessions, and security features.

Together, these projects are positioning FLL to accommodate more than 52 million travelers per year in the coming decade.

What It Means for Fort Lauderdale

As one of the fastest-growing airports in the U.S., FLL is investing in long-term infrastructure to support tourism, business travel, and local economic growth. Terminal 5 will deliver a smoother, more modern travel experience while strengthening Fort Lauderdale’s reputation as a major gateway to South Florida and the Caribbean.
