Let’s face it, window cleaning is not a fun chore. You expend lots of energy reaching, spraying, scrubbing and wiping, only to see streaks everywhere. Don’t throw in the towel just yet. We’ve complied a few tips that will help make all the glass in your home streak-free.
Window Cleaning Tips
1. Solution
For an effective glass cleaning solution, skip those sold in the store and make your own. Mix 2 cups water, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon dish soap. This solution is especially good for exterior windows that tend to accumulate more grime. For glass inside your home, you can omit the dish soap.
2. Water
No matter how good your cleaning solution might be, if you’re using tap water, chances are you will end up with streaks. When adding water to your solution, be sure to use distilled water. Unlike tap water, distilled water will not have all the minerals that can cause streaking.
3. Tools
A combination squeegee/scrubber tool is very handy when cleaning windows. Dip the device into a bucket. Use the scrubber side to remove grim from your windows and the squeegee side to remove your cleaning solution. For windows that are beyond your reach, consider opting for an extension rod instead of using a ladder. Remaining on the ground with your bucket tends to make the task a bit easier and safer than climbing up and down a ladder.
4. Newsworthy
Paper towels can be very handy in the kitchen, so naturally you might think they will work well on your windows. Not so fast! Paper towels tend to leave streaks and lint. The best material for drying your windows is newspaper. The paper will absorb your window cleaning solution, while leaving glass shiny and clean. Since the ink from newspaper transfers easily, consider wearing gloves.
5. Schedule
Like most chores, the longer you wait to clean your windows, the more difficult the task will become. To help keep your glass cleaning task easier, create a regular window cleaning schedule and stick to it!
